Boston

Boston is the largest city and the capital of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is located in the northeastern United States in Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Boston is considered the cultural and economic center in the New England region since it is the largest city in New England. It has an approximate population of more than 590,000 inhabitants in the year 2006.

Boston was founded by Puritan colonist from England in 1630. It has played major roles in various historical events such as the Boston Tea Party and the American Revolution. After attaining American independence, Boston became a manufacturing center and a major shipping port. Municipal annexation and land reclamation has expanded Boston beyond the peninsula.

Boston was the site of several firsts such as Boston Latin School which is the first public school in America and was founded in 1635; Mather School which is the oldest elementary school in America and was also founded in 1635; and Harvard College which is situated in nearby Cambridge, was founded in 1636 and still remains the premier center of learning in America. Boston was also the very first city in America to adopt a public library and it was also the home to the first subway system in the US.

Boston is a famous educational hub and cultural center, and it boasts of its more than 400 colleges, universities and higher learning institutions. It is America’s center of higher education and has the highest concentration of students during the school year when 1 out of 5 Bostonians is a university student. It also has the most number of college students per square foot than any other city on the West Hemisphere.

Aside from being a major center of higher education; Boston is also an important center for high technology, health care and financial services. It is also one of the best destinations in the United States for English language learning since it has a number of high-quality and certified English language schools.
